To lose weight and do not grow, we are moving!


Weight gain is always a lag between input and energy costs. It's like a bank account: what is not spent can be stored. The current epidemic of obesity is the result of the general decline in energy expenditure (mechanization, transportation, TV, computers, etc.) and the increasing consumption of foods high in fat and cheap. The results of the experiment on the Alsatian college for four years, clearly show that when one moves, the risk of gaining weight is neutralized.

ICAPS: Intervention with college students focused on physical activity and sedentary behavior

This is the name of the project implemented in September 2002 in colleges of the Lower Rhine. A year before, a study showed that 22.7% of children 12 years of the department presented overweight, while the national average is 14 to 15%. Eight colleges were drawn, gathering thousands of students 6th of normal weight. In four of them, we set up a physical activity program called "leisure" (during break times and hotlines) and at the same time focus groups on sedentary subjects, health, etc., to which the parents were involved. We do not ask them to change anything to their diet. In the other four colleges, nothing has changed in the programs. But the thousand students all suffered the same medical examination (height, weight, blood test) to be able to compare the results between college students 'action' and 'witnesses'. They also completed the same questionnaire about their lifestyle.

Four years later

Professor Chantal Simon who led this experience with her University research group of Strasbourg, smiling, recently reported the results. While in the "control" group, 9.8% of college students have gained weight, there are only 4.4% in the "action" group. And among these, the "good" cholesterol, HDL reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, increased by 6%. At the same time, these teens spend 20 minutes less watching TV and three quarters of them have taken a liking to the sport, practicing an hour (54 minutes on average) of extra-curricular physical activity per week. This means that when you move - not to change his diet - the risk of overweight is halved. "We had strong indications" said Chantal Simon, "but had never shown so far that we could turn the tide." It's worth thinking ?? and to move!

What is true for middle school Alsace is also for everyone, that we have three or 60 years old. Do not confine a child in a stroller but give her hand to walk as soon as he is able. Organize school trips and other so he can make the maximum walk (or bike) and no car ?? There are a thousand ways not to condition a child to physical inactivity, from an early age and thus prevent a decision always possible weight. Plus it will move, the more he will want to move, to spend and not to stay sprawled in front of the TV. For adults, it is not necessary to engage in strenuous physical activities, or to ruin in gym pass or go jogging in the early morning pale, but simply to use systematically the two legs for us to walk. This means: forget the car (or, when you really have to use it, the park further away and finish on foot), and even if you do not have to walk the dog, go for a walk, while it as often as possible.

Eating slowly everything, listen to his feelings of satiety in order not to go beyond its energy needs, eating bread with every meal, vegetables and fruits, less fat cook possible, these key food equilibrium not really difficult to implement. Combined with the walk, there is no doubt that this change in habits will prevent weight gain and also help to lose.
